SIOUX VILLAGE – In this, the 150th anniversary of its founding, the Sioux Village Arts Council has elected to pay its respects to the region’s Indian ancestry by hosting a sitar music festival this April. Although no Indians have actually lived in Sioux Village since the 1870s, Arts Council members do fondly recall seeing old photographs of distinguished, elderly local Indians sitting cross-legged in front of tepees along with their many U.S. Cavalry soldier guests. Moreover, these Council arts junkies still enjoy tripping out under the influence of the mystical metallic twangs of the Indian sitar such as those George Harrison played on Beatles albums. These geniuses reason that since the sitar has dominated Indian music for some 800 years, what better way to honor their Indian heritage than a full-blown festival devoted to that very instrument?
The festival’s organizers this past Saturday issued an open call using authentic Indian smoke signals from the Council’s tribal bong to invite all sitar musicians and groups throughout the greater Sioux Village metropolitan area. These hopeful event planners anticipate such a profound response that an entire week of sitar performances can be scheduled. And to kick off the festival with a bang, a huge parade around the 6-mile “Trail of Tears” inner-city loop on April 1 is expected to attract sitar marching bands from across the state, throngs of local 4-Hers with their prize-winning buffalos, bears, and pumpkins, as well as current U.S. Cavalry battalions on horseback.
Although the Sioux Village Arts Council has yet to confirm its first sitar artist booking for the festival, they attribute the lack of responses to typical mid-winter malaise, weather delays, and an unfavorable alignment of Jupiter with Mars. Still, organizers encourage all Indians fans and sitar music lovers to buy festival tickets as soon as possible since the host venue, the Sioux Village Slaughterhouse & Municipal Theatre, has a limited seating capacity. Call now at SIO-UXME.
